The Art of Adjustments

Chiropractic Care as Both Science and Craft

If you’ve ever heard the term “chiropractic,” chances are you’ve encountered phrases like “adjustment” or “spinal manipulation.” These terms are often linked to the distinct cracking or popping sounds that can accompany treatment. However, chiropractic adjustments are far more than just a simple “pop.” They are a precise, powerful technique designed to enhance your overall health, mobility, and well-being, addressing both physical and neurological functions.

The Science of Spinal Manipulation: How Adjustments Work

When a vertebra or joint is misaligned, it can limit its range of motion and place pressure on nearby nerves, often leading to pain, stiffness, and dysfunction. A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled, precise technique in which a chiropractor applies targeted force to specific joints, most commonly in the spine, to correct misalignments (known as subluxations) and restore proper function.

Since the nervous system relies on proper spinal alignment to transmit signals between the brain and the body, a chiropractic adjustment helps reduce interference in these neural pathways. By addressing misalignments, the adjustment allows for clearer communication between the brain and body, improving the efficiency of nerve signals. This, in turn, enhances physical mobility, cognitive function, emotional balance, and overall well-being. By optimizing the nervous system’s performance, chiropractic care promotes better health outcomes for both the mind and body, creating a more harmonious and effective system overall.

Understanding Different Chiropractic Techniques

At Activate Chiropractic, we offer a variety of adjustment techniques, each tailored to meet the unique needs of our patients. Depending on your specific condition, comfort level, and treatment goals, Dr. Libby may use one or more of the following methods:

  • Manual Adjustments: This hands-on technique involves applying controlled force to the spine to realign misaligned vertebrae, improve mobility, and alleviate pain. It’s an effective way to restore proper function and relieve discomfort.
  • Neuro-Tonal Adjustments: These adjustments focus on balancing and calming the nervous system. Using advanced insight scanning technology, Dr. Libby can assess areas of stress or dysfunction within the nervous system, known as subluxations. Specific techniques are then applied to address imbalances identified by these scans, helping restore optimal nervous system function.
  • Activator Technique: A gentle, handheld instrument delivers precise impulses to targeted areas of the spine or joints. This technique is ideal for those seeking a gentler, more focused approach. It’s safe and effective for individuals of all ages and helps improve alignment, mobility, and overall comfort.
  • Webster Technique: Designed specifically for pregnant women, this non-invasive technique focuses on optimizing pelvic alignment, relieving discomfort, and supporting proper positioning of the baby for delivery. It’s a safe and gentle method for expectant mothers.
  • Drop Table Technique: This technique uses a specialized table with a drop mechanism. The chiropractor applies a gentle thrust while releasing the drop piece, allowing gravity and momentum to assist in the adjustment. It’s often used for hip alignment and can provide a gentler approach compared to other chiropractic methods.

Each of these techniques is carefully customized to address your unique needs, ensuring you receive the most effective care for optimal healing and well-being.

Post-Care Guidelines for Optimal Recovery

Most patients feel great after a spinal adjustment or mobilization, though mild soreness may occur. This typically resolves within 24 hours. To ease any discomfort, we recommend following the care plan laid out by Dr. Libby, staying hydrated, moving gently, and maintaining good posture.

Dr. Libby will perform a thorough exam to assess your condition and select the most suitable technique to maximize your healing and minimize discomfort. Applying ice or heat can also help relieve soreness.

Understanding Chiropractic Safety Through Research

Chiropractic adjustments are widely regarded as one of the safest, drug-free approaches to relieving back pain. To demonstrate their safety, a study examined biological markers in blood samples after cervical or thoracic spinal manipulation to determine whether it caused tissue damage. The findings showed no evidence of damage in any of the subjects who underwent the manipulations [1].

In addition, a 2019 meta-analysis published in PubMed reviewed 26 studies and concluded that gentle, low-velocity spinal mobilizations are a safe treatment method for infants, children, and adolescents [2]. The American Pregnancy Association also confirms that chiropractic care is safe during pregnancy, with no known contraindications [3].
