Pediatric Chiropractic Safety: What the Research Says About Babies and Kids

Pediatric chiropractic: Dr. Libby gives an infant a gentle adjustment at Activate Chiropractic in Poway

Every August, our Poway office fills with back-to-school energy. New backpacks, new teachers, fall sports sign-ups, and parents thinking about how to set their kids up for a healthy year. It is also the season when we hear one question more than any other: is pediatric chiropractic safe for my baby or my child?

The myth behind that question is worth naming plainly: many people believe chiropractic care is not safe for babies or kids. If that worry has crossed your mind, you are in good company, and you deserve a straight answer backed by evidence. The research, and our daily experience with families here in Poway, tells a much calmer story about pediatric chiropractic.

Where the worry comes from

Most parents picturing a pediatric adjustment are picturing an adult adjustment, the quick, forceful movements they have seen in videos, applied to a small body. Pediatric chiropractic looks nothing like that.

Children are not adjusted like small adults

A review of commonly used pediatric techniques in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractors who care for children modify both the force and the speed of every technique to match the child's age and development (Marchand, 2016). The recommended contact for a newborn is a small fraction of what is used with an adult. With infants, the pressure Dr. Libby uses is close to what you would use to check a ripe tomato: a light, sustained fingertip contact. No twisting, no forceful movements. You can read more about how we adapt care for infants and children at every stage.

What the pediatric chiropractic safety research shows

Two published reviews are worth knowing about.

First, a 2020 rapid review in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies examined studies of spinal manipulative therapy in children under 10 (Corso et al., 2020). The side effects reported in those studies were mild and short-lived, such as brief fussiness or mild soreness that resolved on its own.

Second, a review in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics looked at decades of worldwide case reports involving manual therapy for infants and children across many provider types, not only chiropractors (Todd et al., 2015). Serious events were rare in the published literature, and in most of those cases the child had an underlying condition that had not been identified before care began.

That second finding shapes how we practice pediatric chiropractic more than any other. The lesson is that careful screening matters.

How we care for kids at Activate Chiropractic

Every child who visits us starts with a thorough history and examination, along with INSiGHT neurological scans that give us an objective picture of how the nervous system is functioning. From there, Dr. Libby builds a personalized care plan with measurable progress checks, using gentle, specific adjustments sized to your child's stage of development. If you are exploring care for newborn concerns such as colic, torticollis, or a flat spot on the head, those pages explain how we approach each one.

Two honest notes. Kids tolerate adjustments well, and some children may be briefly fussy or a little tender after a visit; we will always tell you what to expect. And pediatric chiropractic works alongside your pediatrician, never in place of them. Our lane is nervous system health: supporting your child's ability to regulate, adapt, and function well through natural, drug-free care.

Bring us your questions

If you have wondered whether pediatric chiropractic is a good fit for your child, come ask. Families across Poway and North County San Diego bring us their newborns, their kindergartners, and their student athletes, and we never take that trust for granted. It is a privilege to make chiropractic a natural part of whole-family wellness. Schedule a first visit, or reach out with questions first. Dr. Libby is glad to walk you through the exam, the scans, and what care would look like for your family.
